Every city needs a place like this, where you can chill with a cup of coffee and people watch during a nice, sunny day. But Reykjavik’s most popular square is more than a mere hangout. It has a long tradition of being the main public area used when citizens want to protest something. Most recently this was done after the onset of the 2008 financial crisis. Some important landmarks surrounding the square include the Parliament building, the Domkirkjan, Hotel Borg and concert venue Nasa. The rest of the establishment here include restaurants, bars and cafes. Also check out the statue of JónSigurðsson, who was a leader of Iceland's independence movement.
