When it comes to lighthouses, you’re almost guaranteed great photo opportunities, and this one delivers. It’s not just because it’s at the tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula with lovely views of the Faxafloi bay, even though that helps. The best time to come here is after dusk and before dawn, when the night sky is dancing with the lights of the aurora borealis. It can take a while to start up, so you have to be patient. Once the light show starts, it can go on for a long time. Though you can technically take a bus over to the peninsula, most people advise hiking to the lighthouse along the shoreline of the city to its north-western tip. During summer time the islet is a bird sanctuary, and is closed off to all traffic.
The lighthouse itself is not usually open to visitors.
Grotta Lighthouse Travel Tips
- Be careful of crossing over at high tide. The sandy bank is submerged in those times, and the water is nastily cold.
