  • You can walk through the whole thing. Lights highly recommended

  • The path is well marked and relatively level. The caves were great. But bring a head lamp if you want to go very far in.

  • Great place to explore and feel the lava caves

  • Millions of years ago when the giant Icelandic mole rats roumed the lands, the magnificent beasts carved these amazing tunnels. You can spot the exit holes of their tunnels around the island, but in here you can go and see how they actually lived. I highly recommend checking this place out. Use a proper car to go here or get a proper insurance or both. 4x4 not needed when road conditions are good. I would not recommend to children as the mole rat tunnels are filles with loose rocks and the openings are not fenced.

  • This is not as easy to get to as some other fabulous places in Iceland, and so we almost had it to ourselves. Only 1 - 2 other cars the whole time we explored. The lava tubes are huge and the caves only for those who are carefully and seriously prepared. We carefully clambered through No 1 entrance and then explored only from above. Amazing. Well worth the visit. All for free.
