The state of Virginia is no stranger to the years of the Confederacy and the Civil War that followed. All over the state, you’ll come across sites rife with historical significance and landmarks that shaped the course of things. One such pertinent place of interest is St. John's Episcopal Church, where the Second Virginia Convention met in 1775, when Patrick Henry uttered the famous words, “give me liberty or give me death”.
If you’re visiting on Memorial or Labour Day, this famous speech is enacted at around 2:00 pm. The Church cemetery has some of Virginia’s prominent personalities buried here; Edgar Allan Poe’s mother, Elizabeth Arnold Poe and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, George Wythe.

Blessed place ! Aside from its amazing historical significance to America, the stained glass windows are well worth the trip. Gloriously beautiful. The tour guides are a treasure of knowledge and the “Give me liberty or give me death” speech by one of the guides will long be remembered. Thank you!
Saw the Give me liberty of give me death performance. Well done! Performers made you feel you were part of the original event. You are given a chance to speak to them about their performance and the history or the event. Intro gave context of the original meeting. The church is beautiful on the inside. Buy tickets in advance. Arrive early for parking.
Give me liberty or give me death! Yes, it was right here that these famous words were uttered to inspire a group of people who helped to found our country. The talk given was great.
Highly recommend mad reading by Poe at Halloween. And all the 👻 tales around the grave yard.
Phenomenal experience to be able to feel like you're going back in time and observe the events portrayed by great actors on behalf of our founding father's.
