Riga Art Nouveau Museum, Riga Reviews
Small museum with some nicely restored interiors. It serves mainly as a good starting point for your art nouveau tour of this beautiful city. The helpful staff give you leaflets with all the worthwhile buildings in the surrounding streets.
A beautiful, historic building with the most stunning staircase in a beautiful area of Riga. Alberta Iela is a must if you love Art Nouveau architecture. However, I've only given three stars as the staff were not very friendly. The museum advertises interaction of people dressed in typical Art Nouveau dress; however, they either totally ignored us and walked away when we entered the rooms or continued their private conversations. The lady on reception, where you buy your entry tickets, was quite abrupt and we had to ask where to go as she didn't offer any direction. We were very disappointed as we'd expected a more friendly and educational experience. The literature that was advertised on the website wasn't available and we'd intended starting here with our plans for an Art Nouveau tour. A shame as the building itself is lovely, it just needs to be brought alive by welcoming & interested staff. Make sure that you walk up the staircase which is outside of the museum reception. You pay €2 extra to be able to take photos. There are clean toilets but no coffee shop inside. There are plenty of coffee shops outside. We highly recommend The Flying Frog which serves deliciously fresh & tasty food as well as having a fabulous view of Eisenstein's Medusa building in Elizabetes Iela.
On the inside, you'll see an assortment decorated with authentic art Nouveau objects. It's interesting, but I'd only recommend for aficionados of the style. There are extra fees to take pictures or to get your picture taken on an art nouveau hat, which in a museum that is already pretty expensive (7 euros adults, 5 euros students) adds up, and feels a bit stingy. Even if you don't visit, do enter the building to see the famous art nouveau staircase. It's really worth it!
Its expensive and most of the info can be extracted from elsewhere. Possibly some curios inside the reconstruction of an old house might be of some interest if youre into that sort of a thing. Can easily skip
Cool museum, friendly staff. Helped to learn what to look for when we went on a self guided architecture tour!
