Literally translated to City of God, this iconic area has been subject to a very violent past. It used to have has the largest concentrations of favelas in the city. A favela is something that is very unique to the culture of Brazil. It is a settlement that consisting of Shanties which were created to house slaves initially. This area used to be a centre for the drug trade and criminal activities in Rio. Ciudad de Deus, is an attempt to relocate the residents of these favelas and is hence very important to the modern history of Rio di Janerio.

Used as a backdrop for the Movie City of God, this area today has, as mentioned before, witnessed a resurrection of sorts. Today tourists can visit the area to get a glimpse of the history of Brazil.
