This monolith in Rio de Janeiro is a very popular tourist attraction in the city. The rock is famous for being shaped in the form of a human face. There is however some amount of speculation concerning the origin of the carvings. Contrary to local stories and myths, geologists have claimed that there are no proofs regarding the human origins of the carvings and have attributed them to natural sources.

The monolith is the largest in the world that is located on a coastline and it serves as a great marker for ships. One of the main points of interest about the rock is an inscription in an ancient Semitic language that has been found on the face of the rock. People should keep in mind that it is a difficult hike and should be undertaken with supervision from a professional.

  • Amazing view!!! If you’re a trail runner you’ll love the small but steep climb! If you’re not then try to digest the uphill! It’ll be worth it

  • Rugged hike with big views of Rio, the mountains, and the ocean. It was amazing to look down and see hang gliders far below me. It's a pretty scary look down from the top. This is a really serious hike. The trail is well-marked, so it's not easy to get lost, but it is very steep and muddy, and it can be extremely hot and humid. There is a rock scramble near the top that requires you to use all four limbs. Definitely bring solid shoes and a ton of water.

  • An outstanding place but not for beginners or someone scared of heights.. highly recommend taking a guide along..

  • Beautiful panoramic views of Rio, the beaches, Pedra Bonita, Corcovado and all the beauty around. I easily spent 6 hours up here just enjoying the views and how the gig moved in and out. Incredible. More pics on my Instagram @dermessing

  • Short but hard. Doable old and unfit, but tomorrow won't be pretty. And ABSOLUTELY worth it.
