This is probably the only museum in the world to be devoted singularly to the concept of playtime. Founded in 1969, the museum is spread over 26,200 square meters of exhibition space. It’s as much a history museum as it is a children’s museum. It explores thematically the mediums of play that children normally go through - playgrounds, storybooks, videogames, carousel and train rides, movies, and comic books! In addition to collections of all these different types of play, the museum also has archival collections of the study of play. Altogether there are about 450,000 artefacts. The highlights of the museum are:
- World Video Game Hall of Fame
- National Toy Hall of Fame
- Dancing Wings Butterfly Garden
- The Berenstain Bears
Throughout the year the museum organises various events for children. Check out the museum website for details.

Amazing place to bring the kids. There's fun for kids of all ages (including the adults that act like kids). One time I lost my daughter and was searching frantically. One of the staff noticed and immediately everyone was on the lookout. Within minutes she was found. Great trained staff.
We absolutely loved this museum. We were in town with my 2 1/2 year old for some medical appointments and visited on Saturday while we had some down time. My son loved it - he's still talking about it. We're about four hours away, but I'd consider making the trip back just to visit this museum again.
Worth every dollar for a year membership! We would take the kids twice a month and they would never become bored. Best part about it is, they're always changing things up and adding new little adventures for the kids. We're just about to sign up again for our second year!
Went with my nieces and nephews. They had a wonderful time. Many interactive exhibits with subjects from history to video games. If you are visiting Rochester this is a must if you have young children. If you live there, a membership is definitely worth it. Your kids will want to go back.
This museum is awesome. This is a must place to visit with your kids in Rochester. They have a mini wegmans where the kids can pick 5 items and even cash themselves out. They have sesame street, a train ride as well as a carousel...the list goes on. Always a great experience here.
