Any indoor event of import, if it happens at Rockhampton, happens here. The gallery is an event venue, exhibition hall and promoter of arts rolled into one. It would be a mistake to dismiss it as a small town distraction. The very obscurity that detracts from it gives it the freedom of choosing its collection in a manner that would be eclectic anywhere else. Neat and smartly organised the gallery offers two dimensional and three dimensional Australian artwork from over the past century. It fulfils the need of visitors across all ages with its diverse cultural and educational programmes. Kids aren’t likely to be bored.

Fabulous contemporary art on exhibition. The presentation was very dark, which has not helped the viewing. Spot lights tend to create a sheen on the paintings, further hindering the viewing. A great space and very helpful staff. Re-think the lighting, guys.
Situated along the Fitzroy River in the heart of Central Queensland, Rockhampton Art Gallery was established in 1967. The Gallery’s permanent collection tracks Australia’s modernist movement and with artworks by luminaries such as Charles Blackman, Arthur Boyd, Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale, John Brack and Fred Williams amounts to one of the most significant collections in regional Australia. Works by Del Kathryn Barton, Daniel Boyd, Sally Gabori, Imants Tillers and Ben Quilty are representative of the Gallery’s continuing tradition of incorporating a progressive collection with consideration of contemporary influences from across the globe. A diverse exhibition program runs throughout the year with displays drawn from the Gallery's permanent collection, in-house curated projects and touring exhibitions from international, national, state and regional galleries. For a truly immersive art experience, Rockhampton Art Gallery offers innovative education and public programs to visitors of all ages, from toddlers to lifelong learners, and a must-visit gift shop for artisan made giftware. The Gallery is owned and operated by Rockhampton Regional Council.
WOW! Right now July 2018 is an amazing exhibition of Oscar Wilde's "Rose and the Nightingale", featuring an increadible animated short film. MUST SEE!!
Enjoyed the art work. Well displayed. The workers were very informative.
Fantastic permanent collection, and some really wonderful trevelling exhibitions throughout the year. The gift shop always has a great range of quirky or different gifts, and there are often some fun things for kids to do too. Highly recommended.
