Basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati is a unique place of worship in Rome. Its name translates to ‘Four Holy Crowned Ones’ meaning that the church is devoted to four anonymous saints and martyrs. Even though the history of its establishment is a little unclear, it dates back to the 4th century. The structure we see today has been refurbished several times throughout the centuries, but it has succeeded in preserving the 9th-century bell tower. When the Gothic Hall of the monastery was being restored in 2002, historians found a fascinating display of frescoes from the 13th century. Keep in mind that guided visits of the Basilica dei Santi Quattro Coronati are scheduled in advance and are available only for a few days each month.
