Of the seven ancient hills in Rome, the Capitoline hill was one of the most important. The hill lies at the the heart of Rome and once accommodated the Temple of Jupiter (now placed at the Palazzo dei Conservatori) and the Temple of Juno Moneta (believed to be located at the summit under the Santa Maria in Aracoeli and was the place where the Roman coins where minted). The hill still accommodates the Tabularium (the official records office in ancient Rome), Piazza del Campidoglio (the hill’s beautiful square designed in the 16th century by Michelangelo), Victor Emmanuel Monument (built to honor the first king of Italy) and the Santa Maria in Aracoeli located on the summit.
The importance of all these monuments put the city on the map- giving it the nickname of Caput Mundi (the World’s Capital) and even today, a walk around the place is nothing short of spell binding.
