Today decorated with wooden plants, the La Scala Sancta is one of the quirkiest attractions of the city. These steps are traditionally considered to be the steps that Jesus climbed in the house of Pontius Pilate only to see the Roman governor wash his hands of the self-styled messiah. Okay, that information might be too much to digest in one go; but wait there’s more! They were brought back in the 4th century by Emperor Constantine’s mother St. Helena.

The holy stairs are open only to devotees and you can walk up from the normal stairs parallel to these if you are here for sightseeing! At the top, you can observe some earliest Christian relics, the most striking of them being the table where the ‘Last Supper’ is believed to be served!
