Scala Sancta makes for a set of 28 white marble steps that take you to the Church of Saint Lawrence in Palatio ad Sancta Sanctorum. It is believed that Jesus Christ has stepped on these stairs while going for his trial for passion. One can only ascend the steps on knees which has resulted in wearing the stairs down over the centuries. Intricately decorated frescoes and different drawings have become the identity of these steps. Today, Scala Sancta and the artworks here have been restored preserving the frescos as well as historic marble steps.
