Tiber Island - Review

The Tiber Island or the Isola Tiberina is the smaller of two islands situated in the Tiber River. This island has been a popular source of stories and mythological tales since ancient times. Located on the southern bend of the river, the island has been connected by bridges to the land on both ends of the river. These bridges, the most famous one being the Pons Aemilius, have been reconstructed and restored multiple times.

Speaking about this island to locals will surely bring about a sense of awe among tourists. This island was most popular because of the archaic temple to Asclepius which once stood there. Later, it was replaced by a hospital and the island has ever since been closely associated to healing and medicine.

In the beginning however, this island had been forsaken by locals and only criminals and downtrodden were brought here. This is attributable to the stories of how the island was formed upon the body of the loathed Emperor Tarquinius Superbus.

Tiber Island, Rome Reviews

  • Love this area, great gelateria on Tiber island, reasonably priced and pilite staff

  • This lovely island, located in the middle of the Tiber River, offers great views over the water during the day, but gains a whole new magical, fairy-tale-like quality at dusk or night time, when the only Roman bridge that has survived, Ponte Fabriccio, is lit up. There is not much on the island itself except for a beautiful old church and a hospital, but the whole fun lies in the fact that visitors only have to walk ten steps to enter or leave this pretty, boat-shaped spot.

  • A nice romantic place with lots of restaurants, that come alive around 8 p.m. every day.

  • Little river little island great fun. Good to visít it.

  • The island is historical dating back to 290 BC... when a temple was built for healing...later it was a hospital and there is also a Basilica from the 10 century .....Many wonderful sights walking the banks of the River Tiber some expected and other unexpected....its not how I prefer my art but some prefer art on themselves .. venturing into the side streets....there are good places to eat....
