  • Plan to spend most of your day here because there is so much to see. If you want to see real volcanic activity in New Zealand, take a tour through here. There are several tour options ranging from boat tours, walking tours to combinations of the two. We did the walking tour and it was awesome. It took us about 4.5 hours to do the whole park, including the side hikes. There are even side hikes you can do that are actually fairly challenging, but doable for most people. I recommend doing them though because the side hikes are worth it. There is even a section of the valley that includes a lake that doubles as a bird sanctuary.

  • Amazing volcanic valley. Particularly interesting after visiting the buried village and hearing about the formation of the whole area. Fabulous hot waterfall and frying pan lake was a visual wonder. It's worth noting that the park requires considerable walking (about 4klms) and that includes steep hills. It was not suitable for people with mobility issues. There are good pathways and a shuttle bus but to see things, you still need to be able to walk around. Very worthy of the visit. Keep an eye out for discount vouchers in some of the tourist information.

  • An amazing experience- spent 6 hours touring. We hiked 4 hours and did the boat cruise for 2 hours. Both were spectacular, it’s definite ‘how the world began’.

  • Beautiful naturer. Only negative is some of there view point they have maked. Is overgrown. So you can only see plants and not what you are supposed to see.

  • Charming park which is good fun for a group of varying fitness or families with children. Bubbling waters, steam vents line the walking route. The whole walk, minus the detour up Mt. Haszard, is about 5 km. There are plenty of photo-opportunities and benches if you need a breather or just to relax. Thoughtful bus service that loops back just under once an hour. If you want to add - on a lake tour on a boat you can do that too when you get to the pier. If you're an avid walker looking for something challenging then this might not be what you're looking for. We just came off the Northern Circuit tramp and found this a nice activity for the morning. Takes about 1.5hrs if you stop to take photos and admire the geothermal activity.
