About Wadjemup Lighthouse, Rottnest Island

Thousands of tourists come to see the lighthouse every year. It’s an important part of the island’s heritage, and also the highest point on the island. The stone building you see today is the second that was built here. The one before it was also the first lighthouse ever built in Western Australia. The tower you see today is twice the height of the original. It’s also Australia's first rotating beam lighthouse.

While you CAN go to the top of the tower, you have to do it the hard way – climb 155 steps up. The 360 degree panoramic views are worth it though, from 80 metres above sea level. The island, the sea, the beaches – they all look sublime from up there.

Wadjemup Lighthouse Opening and Closing Hours

  • Find out the tower’s tour and opening times at the visitor centre.
  • Closing time: 3 P.M.
  • Recommended time to visit: 12pm-2:30pm (approx)

  • A really breathtaking 360 view of the island from up there, at a cheap tour fee. You can see the Pink Lake, Narrow Neck, bays from up there. Tour guide is also very informative and enthusiastic, had fun in the tour that we forgot the hike up

  • Were here in September 2017. About 10 minutes walk from the bus stop #8 one way. Though we didn't manage to do the tour up, the surrounding view outside is still beautiful enough to kill some shots. Worth stopping by even if you don't go up the lighthouse.

  • Interesting visit and the volunteer guides were very friendly. Best views on the island.

  • Nice walk/cycle there with good views on top.

  • Highest point of the island. This spot is my favourite of all in the island. Overlooking the big gun on another hill. Could see it very clearly with binoculars. Nice lighthouse made of limestone.
