The longest uninterrupted-operating art museum in the West, the Crocker Art Museum holds the state’s finest collection of Californian art. The exhibition has some very fine pieces of art in its permanent collection and keeps getting some or the other exquisite pieces to showcase on their temporary one. Credit for the museum goes to Edwin B. Crocker, a banker, who started to collect various drawings and paintings along with his wife in 1869 and thus heralded the beginning of a grand new collection for the future generations.

Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento Reviews - Write a Review

  • Brought my grandmother (in a wheelchair) here for lunch and to see the special exhibits. Museum staff is friendly and helpful. Highly recommended for art lovers—especially anyone interested in California art. The newer part of the museum has a good collection of local artists, including those who taught art at Sacramento’s local colleges.

  • As I lived in large cities (LA, DC, NY), I've been to quite a few museums too. Although this museum doesn't have the MOST FAMOUS artists out there, I find their collection to be varied, well put-together, and pleasant. In particular, I found the placards beside the art to be thoughtfully written and they even ask the audience to interact with the art through questions or asking them to look for particular characteristics in the artwork. My favorite exhibits are on the third floor and also the second floor ceramics. The workers are kind and personable. In a town that is oversaturated with history museums, I recommend this museum to visitors who have an interest in art.

  • Pretty entertaining. A lot of exhibits don't change but enough do to make it worth while every time. My 3 year old son was even entertained by the art.

  • A great museum to take your family , took my kids here , it’s a great museum for art and history . There are some art pieces from 1500’s . Can be a great learning experience for your children . They have guided tours that are fee . There is a restaurant inside that servers very tasty food , try the burger it is delicious. The serve wine and beer there also . Definitely a place you may return to more than once .

  • Really like the cafe and seating area. Good food that is not run of the mill, generic. Nice employees at this museum. Love the openness and light and architecture of the modern addition. Love the woodwork in the original mansion. Nice to see some native American art and art from other countries. The museum has a great deal of pottery and China. My favorite part of the museum is the art that features American people and places. Love the paintings of Yosemite and the western United States. The museum is huge. Visit the parts that interest you the most first. I didn't, and ran out of time and energy. Definitely want to come back to concentrate on the paintings in the mansion. Highly recommended everyone to visit the Crocker Art Museum. Because it is so large, beautiful and has a great cafe (and coffee) it really and truly is a destination. Excellent gift store, also.
