Church Of The Savior On Blood - Review

Previously known as Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, this iconic landmark is one of the most important destinations in Saint Petersburg. Being a major attraction, the church attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists on an annual basis.

Established on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated, the church was dedicated to his memory. Alexander III commissioned the construction of the church in the name of his father and it turned out to be a memorial fit for the gods.

One interesting point about the architecture of the church is that it differs quite a lot from the typical structures that are found in Russia. Straying away from the neo-classical and baroque styles of architecture, this church was constructed with a touch of Romantic Nationalism sensibilities that is uncommon among Russian architecture. The church authorities claim that it has over seven thousand four hundred square meters of mosaic which is greater than any other church in the world.

  • Currently under partial renovation, so part of the domes are wrapped in white plastic. Still, the interiors are awesome!! All ceilings and walls are covered with beautiful mosaics on the life of Jesus. The entrance ticket is quite cheap. Highly recommended!

  • This is the most picturesque church in Russia. The Colors of the ace are simply outstanding. Notice the paintings on the walls, which are mosaic. Exquisite piece of work.

  • Outstanding place. Absolutely necessary to visit it. You will be with the mouth open. Unbelievable

  • The artwork is astounding in every possible way. It is probably the most beautiful example of iconic Russian architecture / Eastern Orthodox artwork in existence. Stunning.

  • One of the most impressive churches I've ever been in. Amazing architecture from the outside - and the inside is covered entirely in golden mosaics, from floor to ceiling including columns. Very much deserves a visit - plus there are some interesting historical spots such as the one where one of the tzars was stabbed to death or the spot where a bomb fell during WWII.
