Previously known as Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, this iconic landmark is one of the most important destinations in Saint Petersburg. Being a major attraction, the church attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists on an annual basis.
Established on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated, the church was dedicated to his memory. Alexander III commissioned the construction of the church in the name of his father and it turned out to be a memorial fit for the gods.
One interesting point about the architecture of the church is that it differs quite a lot from the typical structures that are found in Russia. Straying away from the neo-classical and baroque styles of architecture, this church was constructed with a touch of Romantic Nationalism sensibilities that is uncommon among Russian architecture. The church authorities claim that it has over seven thousand four hundred square meters of mosaic which is greater than any other church in the world.

Astonishing outside and stunning inside. All inside interior is made of little tiny mosaic tiles. Thousand square meters of mosaic, simply unbelievable. Place is open through 22:00 with tickets price slightly higher the price during the normal working hours 10:30 - 18:00. See one of my pictures, it has picture of the ticket with time. Fewer people at night and much more free space inside so highly recommend going after 8-9 pm. Google maps did not believe me and rejected suggested edit for the working hours. So believe me it is open after 6pm through 10pm. Not many places in Saint-Petersburg opened and night so you may plan visiting this one later at the day. Ticket price is 400 rubles vs. 250 during normal hours and it’s worth going there definitely.
Eye candy in every direction. The most beautifully restored and decorated church that I have ever seen anywhere. A must see, regardless of your faith. The artwork is outstanding on every square inch of the building.
The most beautiful church in the city in my opinion. The exterior is of the of unique Russian style and interior is completely decorated with thousands of square feet of mosaics. It is just spectacular! They allow to take pictures inside which is nice. The church is still a working church but open to tourists everyday and it’s a must visit. The exterior of the main dome is under restoration these days but interior is completely done. The ticket is not expensive at all and you can even buy souvenirs inside which goes to the church fun in aid of maintaining it I believe.
A great decorated church by beautiful channels. You can walk by or take a channel tour. Really beautiful from the inside as well.
The famous and unbelievable gold decorated church you may ever seen. The golden and colored domes is a very beautiful landmark of Saint Petersburg and maybe the whole world. On the walls, columns and the ceiling the story of Jesus Christ is drawn in segments explaining every moment the christian world need to remember. The Altar is separated from the centre of the church by a rosy Italian marble wall which is very beautiful. This place is a must visit when you are in Saint Petersburg.
