About Church Of The Savior On Blood, Saint Petersburg

Previously known as Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, this iconic landmark is one of the most important destinations in Saint Petersburg. Being a major attraction, the church attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists on an annual basis.

Established on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated, the church was dedicated to his memory. Alexander III commissioned the construction of the church in the name of his father and it turned out to be a memorial fit for the gods.

One interesting point about the architecture of the church is that it differs quite a lot from the typical structures that are found in Russia. Straying away from the neo-classical and baroque styles of architecture, this church was constructed with a touch of Romantic Nationalism sensibilities that is uncommon among Russian architecture. The church authorities claim that it has over seven thousand four hundred square meters of mosaic which is greater than any other church in the world.

  • The most fabulous building I have ever visited... The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood is one of the main sights of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Other names include the Church on Spilled Blood, the Temple of the Savior on Spilled Blood, and the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. This church was built on the site where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded by political nihilists in March 1881. The church was built between 1883 and 1907. The construction was funded by the imperial family.

  • Tourists abound during the day but at night - drunks, delinquents, beauties. Sheer intoxication parades before this holy entity. Architectural pride protects you, and appears to absolve the ruins of their psyche. I’m embarrassed to witness this year after year. I yearn gauge the progression of society by determining the disappearance (and absolution) of nocturnal depravity before you.

  • Biggest and the most stunning interior and exterior Orthodox Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. Located in the heart of the city. There is small entry fee which is totally worth contributing to maintenance of the monument.

  • This place looks like the St. Basil in Moscow. You could feel the gist of St. Basil cathedral. It was good for the appetizer of the famous cathedral in Moscow.

  • The Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (also called the Church on Spilled Blood ) is unlike the other Baroque and Neoclassical churches in St Petersburg. After the assination of his father, Alexander III chose to build the church in the same style as St Basil to honor his father and their family's Russian history. The church was built over the road in the exact spot Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded by a grenade in March 1881.
