Previously known as Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, this iconic landmark is one of the most important destinations in Saint Petersburg. Being a major attraction, the church attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists on an annual basis.
Established on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated, the church was dedicated to his memory. Alexander III commissioned the construction of the church in the name of his father and it turned out to be a memorial fit for the gods.
One interesting point about the architecture of the church is that it differs quite a lot from the typical structures that are found in Russia. Straying away from the neo-classical and baroque styles of architecture, this church was constructed with a touch of Romantic Nationalism sensibilities that is uncommon among Russian architecture. The church authorities claim that it has over seven thousand four hundred square meters of mosaic which is greater than any other church in the world.
