Kizhi is a small island that is situated in Lake Onega. The positioning of the island corresponds roughly with the geometric centre of the Lake. This island is rich in history and has numerous allusions to the rich and vibrant history of the city of Saint Petersburg and Russia.

This island has two 18th century churches and bell towers which act as the major attraction. This collection is known as the Kizhi Pogost. Built almost entirely out of wood, the church and bell tower are extremely well regarded for their beauty and for the fact that it has withstood the test of time.

Today, most of this island is maintained as an open air museum and people can see remnants from the great Kizhi Uprising and other periods in history in the form of old settlements and other structures.
