The Palace square holds a commanding position in St Petersburg. It is surrounded by great architectural buildings like the baroque Winter Palace on one side and the Imperial Army General Staff building and Hermitage museum on the other, and dates back to the times of Alexander the Great. The Nevsky Prospect lies just a few metres away from the square and it is flanked by the Admiralty gardens, making it a picture-perfect portrait. Standing proud in the middle of the square is the Alexander Column, designed by Monteferrand for the Great Conqueror. The Palace Square has witnessed many historic events including the Bloody Sunday of 1905, the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917, as well as night-long vigils in the name of democracy during the 1991 Communist coup.
