It is one of the most captivating historical buildings located in Salamanca. It’s a 15th century building with 350 sandstone shells studded on the surface of its facade. It was built by Rodrigo Arias de Maldonado, a knight of the Order of Santiago de Compostela and a professor in Salamanca University. At present, the building houses a public library and an art gallery. The striking feature of the building is the mixture of Gothic and Plateresque style in its architectural design. The shells clinging on the facade symbolizes ‘the order of Santiago’. The windows are designed in a Gothic style with different shapes and the entrance portal has ‘the coats of arms’ of the Maldonado family. In the architrave, you can see dolphins (renaissance symbol of love and vegetable). In the lower floor, the inner court has arches supported by square pilasters while in the upper floor; the court is supported by shorter columns in Carrara marble.

Beautiful public library and open to the public.
Casa de las conchas is perhaps the most beautiful public library in the world.
Other than the stunning arquitecture, both external and internal, the building is also a local library with tonnes of resources.
I got use of the public library there... Beautiful building representative of one of one of the longest educational institutions there University of Salamanca. The oldest University in theoretical studies in the world. The building itself was commission by a Salamanca university professor a year after the foundation of Spain as a country.
Impressive building with 300 seashells on the exterior walls. Very nice patio inside.
