Universidad De Salamanca - Review

It is the Spanish higher education institution. It is said to be the oldest founded university in Spain and the 4th oldest European University. It was founded in 1134, given royal character of foundation by King IX in 1218 and later was granted the title ‘University’ by the kind in 1254. Later in 1255, it was recognized by Pope Alexander IV. The moment you enter the university campus, the first thing your eye will capture is the entrance façade. It is a tapestry, made by sandstone, filled with images of mythical heroes, religious scenes and coats of arms. The most popular figure in the façade is the frog on a skull. It is popularly known as La Rana de Salamanca. Beside these sculptures, the university has a library where you can find 2800 manuscript preserved. The patio area, as popularly known as Patio de las Escuelas is something to look out for.

Universidad De Salamanca, Salamanca Reviews

Google+
  • Cash only, overpriced, boring audio guide. Worth a quick visit only if you have time

  • Nice place but a little bit overpriced for 10e

  • Wonderful architecture, good explanations (could sometimes be a bit more in detail), excellent audio guide, very interesting.

  • Paid 10 Euro so I could go see the old library. As a bibliophile I love that kind of thing! But then you can't even get in. You can look at the old library through a window and can't even go in the new library. Save your money if you want to see the library. Look at pics on Google and visit the one at El Escorial.

  • It's beautiful and very old, yes, but it's not exactly what I think of when I hear tourist attraction. It was a very brief sight to see, at it's exactly what you'd expect a university to be...just old. Not saying it was bad, it's just not something I'd recommended to a friend to spend their time on.
