About Igreja De Nosso Senhor Do Bonfim, Salvador

Known as the church that grants wishes, the Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim is Salvador’s most celebrated church. Thronged by tourists and believers alike, this church made famous the colourful ribbons that you’ll see tied around the wrists of many people all over the city. These ribbons are meant to bring you good luck, so buy some from any of the vendors that will overwhelm you by their sheer presence. This church is known more for its faith than architecture; home to the Candomble religion, this church worships the religion’s highest deity. The most interesting room in the church is the Room of Miracles where people come and part with valuables in order to fulfill their wishes. The church is said to have such great powers of healing that replicas of body parts made of wood and plastic are seen hanging in the church, left by people whose body parts have said to been cured by the church’s power.

Igreja De Nosso Senhor Do Bonfim, Salvador Reviews

  • This church in Brazil has a lot of history. If you come to Salvador and don't visit the church, you are missing out. The church has a room full of photos and cast body parts which represent a 'miracle room', Brazilians believe in Saints, and when they get a miracle, they bring a photo or something; that will represent it. The wristbands that you will see everywhere are very famous in Brazil. It means when you tie it to your wrist, you need to make 3 wishes in every single knot, (3 knots, 1 wish for each) when it come loose, the wishes comes true. The church has daily mass and it is beautiful inside. It is a perfect place to go and watch the sunset. Enjoy!

  • Magical, mystical place. You can feel the energy coming from the place and all the faithful that pack this historic church.

  • A church other than all which I visited. Very weird is a hall with plastic parts of the body. And don't forget to leave Yours FITAS on the wall

  • The basilica is a pilgrimage location for Brazilians. They travel long distances to visit the place when in need of divine intervention for some malaise including bringing plastic body parts in the hope that they will be cured. You will probably be handed out some of those colourful ribbons ..... a tip is appreciated!

  • Must see for any tourist visit, and a good place to go every few years if you are a local. Make sure to get some Bonfim ribbons to tie to the fence outside. If you are lucky enough to be there the middle of January there is a huge procession where thousands of people walk from just below the Pelourinho to the church. It's a sacred procession but not a solemn one. Plenty of beer, food, água de coco, etc. along the route.
