The Museu de Arte Sacra or the Museum of Sacred Arts is Brazil’s premiere museum when it comes to Catholic art. The exhibit starts from the building itself, which used to be a former convent. On a mission to preserve religious art, the people at Museu de Arte Sacra have done a fabulous job. The monks’ quarters now hold a vast collection of 17th-18th century art, along with the remains of a demolished Igreja de Se. Oil painting, wooden statues of saints and a cabinet containing a crucifix are just some of notable things on display. In case time is a concern, head straight to the silver room and learn about how the artisans in Brazil adapted and refined their technique; they were producing top grade crosses and crucifixes during the 18th century.
