Residenzplatz - Review

This square in the heart of Salzburg’s old town is an attraction by default. Surrounded on all sides by stately buildings, with a lovely fountain in its center, and throngs of tourists crowding it every day, the 1587 square is usually one of the first attractions on any itinerary of the city. It is surrounded by the Neue Residenz and its museums, the Salzburg Cathedral, the Salzburger Residenz, the Salzburger Weinachts museum and the Cafe Glockenspiel. There is also a row of burgher houses. The 1661 marble fountain in the center of the square was built by Tomasso di Garona, and is the largest baroque fountain of Middle Europe. Note the sculptures of the horses, the giants, the dolphins, and the deity Triton. Concerts, parties and sporting events are frequently held here.

Residenzplatz, Salzburg Reviews

  • Beautiful square in the kernel of the city. A must to visit because give access to the fortress, the most important church and Mozart square with the statue of the famous musician and city museum and district museums. Great place to take pictures if you like and don't miss to taste Mozartkugeln, the famous ball of Mozart chocolate.

  • When visiting Salzburg, consider visiting Residenzplatz. Which is one of the famous squares to visit in the Old Town. This is exactly where the residence building of the Prince Archbishops of Salzburg and the Salzburg Cathedral are located. This is a great location to visit, here's why. First, the architecture and history bring charm to the square. Second, the Residenz Fountain is considered one of the most significant baroque monuments in Europe. The Italian sculptor, Tommaso di Garone is the craftsman behind it all. Above all, the fountain is renown and famous for another reason. That's because it was one of the filming location for the famous movie “The Sound of Music”! You might have heard of it. Yet many tourists visit Salzburg for the Sound of Music tour. Serge: 4 Eli: 4+ Recommend: Yes, really beautiful square and fountain. Tips Just wear comfortable shoes to walk around. Also consider a jacket during springtime.

  • Lovely hotel but mainly ski resort so in the summer all the facilities weren't available seem to be operating somewhat on a skeleton staff.

  • This beautiful square is in the centre of the main tourist attractions and historic centre so it is a good place to start you visit in Salzburg; there is a beautiful fountain (which is the biggest Baroque fountain in central Europe) and with plenty of open space, beautiful architecture all around the pictures will be great.

  • It's a nice place to visit, since it's placed in the middle of the city.
