This square in the heart of Salzburg’s old town is an attraction by default. Surrounded on all sides by stately buildings, with a lovely fountain in its center, and throngs of tourists crowding it every day, the 1587 square is usually one of the first attractions on any itinerary of the city. It is surrounded by the Neue Residenz and its museums, the Salzburg Cathedral, the Salzburger Residenz, the Salzburger Weinachts museum and the Cafe Glockenspiel. There is also a row of burgher houses. The 1661 marble fountain in the center of the square was built by Tomasso di Garona, and is the largest baroque fountain of Middle Europe. Note the sculptures of the horses, the giants, the dolphins, and the deity Triton. Concerts, parties and sporting events are frequently held here.
