Housed inside the Neue Residenz, and previously known as the Museum Carolino-Augusteum, this is an art, history and culture museum. And the topic of interest is Salzburg, past, present, and a little future. Artefacts from Celtic times, excavations from Roman times, the Baroque transformation during the age of prince-archbishops - these are are thoroughly explored. And supplementing this exploration is a lovely collection of the best sacred art the city has to offer from the Romanesque and Gothic times. You’ll also find an excellent musical intruments collection. Outside of these permanent exhibits the museum also organises changing temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

Remember to check out the Panorama Passage, which connects this museum to the other museum in the building, the Panorama museum. It is filled with murals and other artefacts excavated from Roman times.

A final highlight of this section of the New Residence must be seen from the outside. That is the Glockenspiel, a bell tower with a pretty carillon that rises from the west half of the building. The 18th century mechanism plays popular tunes by Haydn and Mozart to entertain tourists.
