About Natural Bridge Caverns, San Antonio

This cavern has a bit of a man-nature love story to it. When student Orion Knox Jr. found this cavern, he approached the landowner, Mrs. Clara Wuest with the idea of developing it. The various bodies they contacted for the purpose agreed with the intent, but admitted they did not have the funds for such an endeavor. Undaunted, Orion and Clara took it upon themselves to develop this site, along with help from Clara’s new hubby, patrolman Harvey Heidemann and a man named Jack Burch. Since that time, this place has been managed by that very family. Excavations have revealed some prehistoric animal and human bones and artefacts – including skull parts from an extinct black bear.

Currently the tours in the caves go about 180 feet underground into an atmosphere that maintains precise cool temperatures and humidity all year around. You can choose from various tours – its going to be fantastic any which way. Playing around with the zip glides or being plunged into moments of absolute darkness – the caves will take you completely out of your comfort zone, but you’ll be safe.

  • We've been to the two caves here, and just so you know, it's always best to come after there's been some rain, or if there's been recent rain. If it hasn't rained in a while, the cave doesn't look as good because the formations will be dry and they don't look as "shiny." Tour guides are knowledgeable and take their time explaining formations and answering questions. The temperature in the caves is cool (somewhere in the high 60's or low 70's, if I remember correctly) but the humidity in there is 100% so dress accordingly. It's on the pricey side, but well worth it if you like to enjoy natural wonder like this!

  • Oh how this was so wonderful. A group of us led the scouts through the beautiful caverns. There are multiple attractions, so one may take many trips and see something new and each visit. The maze was hard, but in a good way. The staff very informative, and friendly. A must try if your into geology.

  • We had an AMAZING time. We got up early and went for their first tour so it was just the three of us which is totally fine with me. The prices are great and if you want you can get the ticket for the Caverns and the Natural Bridge which is a win-win! Our tour guide, Larry, did a great job and made quite a few funny jokes that made us laugh and entertained our daughter. The complexity of the Caverns and the knowledge that they are still finding new rooms and exploring it is incredible. And knowing that there is life down there is amazing too. Didn't see any bats or salamanders but we did get to see some tiny beetles that feed the salamanders. Super cool! And the gift store has a lot of great items at reasonable prices. All of the staff was super friendly and played a long with my daughter because she wanted to buy one of their toy snakes. Definitely a place I'd love to go back to if we ever get the chance just to we how much the Caverns have changed since they are still forming, growing, and they are finding new rooms.

  • The caverns themselves were amazing! Be warned it's a family friendly place, so if kids aren't your cup of tea then maybe you should try and set up a private event. Also, bring your own water cause the water bottles you can buy are a bit pricey.

  • We visited the Natural Bridge Caverns the same day we went to the Wildlife Ranch. Loved it! The price wasn't too bad when you add a coupon (We had one for 15% off). We went on the Discovery Tour. It was 70 degrees down there but 99% humidity, so it was still nice and hot... The tour guides were great. They know their stuff. The views were amazing. My 7 year old loves rocks, so this was right up her alley! We were definitely worn out when the tour was over, but we loved it. The food and drinks are expensive, but you'll want to have some cash with you because you'll need that drink when the tour is over. The mining was fun, too. It was an overall great trip for the family.
