About Natural Bridge Caverns, San Antonio
This cavern has a bit of a man-nature love story to it. When student Orion Knox Jr. found this cavern, he approached the landowner, Mrs. Clara Wuest with the idea of developing it. The various bodies they contacted for the purpose agreed with the intent, but admitted they did not have the funds for such an endeavor. Undaunted, Orion and Clara took it upon themselves to develop this site, along with help from Clara’s new hubby, patrolman Harvey Heidemann and a man named Jack Burch. Since that time, this place has been managed by that very family. Excavations have revealed some prehistoric animal and human bones and artefacts – including skull parts from an extinct black bear.
Currently the tours in the caves go about 180 feet underground into an atmosphere that maintains precise cool temperatures and humidity all year around. You can choose from various tours – its going to be fantastic any which way. Playing around with the zip glides or being plunged into moments of absolute darkness – the caves will take you completely out of your comfort zone, but you’ll be safe.

Natural Bridge Caverns, San Antonio Reviews - Write a Review
Very expensive but fun. About a 30 minute cave tour and you go 180' deep. Very good tour guides that are very nice. After you are done, they have a concession stand with food and sweets. There are 2 gift shops with cool souvenirs. There is a restaurant too with great options like hot dogs, sausage on a stick, fudge, and more. There is a great walk around plaza with a zip line and a physical activity adventure.
The only caverns in Texas, Unique and fun for adults and young kids. We did the lantern tour which is the first tour of the morning while the lights in the caverns are still off. Our tour guides were very helpful and informative, and provided lots of great insights about the discovery of the caverns, rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. This is a one of a kind experience! Must see! P. S. There are other attractions on the property as well, so check out their website and plan accordingly.
I chose the plan to join tours for two caverns. The first one is the main one, with quite many tourists. It is very spacious with many wonderful stalagmites and Stalactites. The main underground dome area is tremendous. A lot less people participates in the second cavern. It is smaller than the first one, but has the glass needle like formations that are not seen in the first cavern. Also, the guide would turn off all lights at a point to let tourists experience true darkness. If I ever come here again, will plan to participate the off-route adventurous tour.
We had an AMAZING time. We got up early and went for their first tour so it was just the three of us which is totally fine with me. The prices are great and if you want you can get the ticket for the Caverns and the Natural Bridge which is a win-win! Our tour guide, Larry, did a great job and made quite a few funny jokes that made us laugh and entertained our daughter. The complexity of the Caverns and the knowledge that they are still finding new rooms and exploring it is incredible. And knowing that there is life down there is amazing too. Didn't see any bats or salamanders but we did get to see some tiny beetles that feed the salamanders. Super cool! And the gift store has a lot of great items at reasonable prices. All of the staff was super friendly and played a long with my daughter because she wanted to buy one of their toy snakes. Definitely a place I'd love to go back to if we ever get the chance just to see how much the Caverns have changed since they are still forming, growing, and they are finding new rooms.
Fun for kids. Loved the sluice for finding gems in their bags of dirt. They have a high ropes challenge and maze which looked fun, but it was too hot out during my visit to try that out. Pro Tip... This cave is not cool/cold. Due to the humidity this cave takes in (90% can be)... Don't bring a jacket as it's warm. Also, you should be physically fit for this cave... If you have doubts then hang back. They have a pretty good slope that's hard on your heels and legs. This cave does have a lot of different formations which are fun. The gift shop is nice. They have snacks and water/pops.
