SAMA is an important San Antonio Landmark. It was originally the building of the historic Lone Star Brewery. It’s a brilliant place to either start or end the River Walk. Most of it’s exhibits specialise in pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial and Latin American folk art, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth-century, American and European paintings, photography, sculpture and decorative arts, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman Art and Chinese ceramics.
There are also displays of contemporary art, oceanic art, Islamic art and an entire section devoted to temporary exhibitions. The staff is certainly friendly and helpful and knowledgable enough about the exhibits to make sure that you come away enriched. The restaurant is lovely too with good food and it overlooks the San Antonio River Walk.

This place is hard to navigate if you know what exhibit you want to find but if you're just ambling around, it's great. Each exhibit gets it's not own nook or cranny of the museum and each new one you encounter can feel very different from the last. We went during the two-hour free entry period (Sundays 10a-12p) and had a great time checking out all the exhibits. Some beautiful, interesting, new, and old items. Would definitely come back again to explore some more.
I was fortunate enough to go during the 500 Years of Spain exhibit and it was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. The paintings displayed were extraordinary. And the regular collection is impressive. I love the variety of paintings and artifacts that can be seen in this 8 level museum. Technically it's four levels but there are two wings so 8 feels truer. On the Japan floor is one of my favorite pieces, a vase with cranes, the intricacies and craftsmanship are quite remarkable. Honestly, there are too many pieces that spoke to me and really stood out. I haven't been to all of San Antonio's museums yet but so far this one is my favorite.
Fabulous museum! The layout is unique, and the exhibits are both ancient and contemporary. Allow yourself plenty of time to see everything. We we were there for just under three hours, and I felt we had to rush to see everything. $20 each to get in, but well worth it.
We went for the Spain special exhibit and it was marvelous! I suggest coming to enjoy the beautiful art. Even with a 30 minute line it was well worth the wait. I will consider a membership here in hopes that I can see new exhibits before the longer lines build up. Great facility that is clean and spacious. Wonderful floor layout, and nice little giftshop as well!
I had the most amazing experience at this museum. All the art and artifacts are something to behold. . .so many gems. I won't lie to y'all, I fell in love at this museum. . .I fell hard, I fell fast. I could even go on about the parking, that's how incredibly unforgettable my visit to this museum was and will stay in my memory. Deserves a sixth star 🌟 Bravo!
