There has been a cross on top of this hill since 1913. The cross you see today was built in 1954. It is a huge structure of recessed concrete. Since the late 1980s, the cross has been the subject of controversy, namely, that it is illegal to hoist a religious monument on public land. The case to keep or remove the cross is on-going. In the meantime, you can still climb the hill to the cross for spectacular panoramas of San Diego from the top. You'll also find a war memorial there, dedicated to veterans of the Korean War. The Mountain itself is very popular with cyclists, who love the lack of traffic and the multiple routes down from the top.
