Torrey Pines Gliderport - Review

Dubbed the 'Kitty Hawk of the West', this historic glider airport has been in near constant use since 1930. Access is free, and you don't even need to fly to enjoy a day out here. Many content themselves in two other ways. The first is dining at the the Cliff Hanger Cafe; locals like to say it's the best place for sandwich with a view. Dolphins and whales can sometimes be seen from the cliffs. The second is to head down to the nearby Black Beach to watch others in flight. There is one runway from the ocean cliffs at Torrey Pines where people can take off. Food and drinks can be had at. Saturday evenings in April are a time for barbeque and live music.

The The Torrey Pines Gliderport does offer lessons though, though the prices can be steep.

  • Our adventure with the Torrey Pines Gliderport was beyond incredible! The overall experience was so relaxing and one of the best things I've ever done! Once you go trough the paperwork and preparation, the staff is very helpful and sets you up with an instructor. I could not believe how easy it was to take off and land. My instructor was so wonderful and informative. I would recommend this activity to anyone who may be hesitant because it is so easy! Take off and landing was so gentle, I felt like I was in a hammock flying in the sky. Thank you for our amazing flight!

  • Very cool and the sandwich shop is pretty good. Felt a little sorry for the sandwich maker order taker. It's the same guy, busting his butt doing both jobs and there's always a line of hungry people. Props to that guy even though he was a little short with customers but not real aggro. Looked at his tip jar and there was only spare change. Don't be cheap people. Please show a little appreciation. This guy is doing a great job trying to make your Torrey Pines glider port visit a memorable one. The viewing deck to watch the paragliding is very nice with shade and incredible views south to La Jolla cove and north to the Oceanside pier and further on really clear days.

  • Best experience ever!!! I use a wheelchair and can't walk as soon as i showed up there they said that it was not a problem that the sky is the limit. We went the staff and owner are really courteous and helped me with the equipment. They made sure i had got to enjoy the joy of paragliding. Thanks for making it happen. Make sure to sign up for the pictures, there worth it.

  • It was fun to watch. On Sundays,it is very busy,so parking is free, but we had to park 1/2 mile away. It is $175 for the experience, but no worries,a professional person will be with you the whole time. Every one we asked, after the ride, said it was great. They BBQ yummy hot dogs, french fries drinks and more at a fair price. There are places to sit as well.

  • This is a great place to visit, not even for the gliding. The parking lot is unpaved, but free and wide, the scenery is great. The coffee shop has decent coffee and some snacks. You could sit there, and look at people flying, or of course try it yourself! You can also access towards the cliff and the Black beach.
