Dubbed the 'Kitty Hawk of the West', this historic glider airport has been in near constant use since 1930. Access is free, and you don't even need to fly to enjoy a day out here. Many content themselves in two other ways. The first is dining at the the Cliff Hanger Cafe; locals like to say it's the best place for sandwich with a view. Dolphins and whales can sometimes be seen from the cliffs. The second is to head down to the nearby Black Beach to watch others in flight. There is one runway from the ocean cliffs at Torrey Pines where people can take off. Food and drinks can be had at. Saturday evenings in April are a time for barbeque and live music.

The The Torrey Pines Gliderport does offer lessons though, though the prices can be steep.

  • This place has terrific views, and the hang gliders are incredibly fun to watch. I love to go at sunset and see the colors over the ocean. Black's Beach is a bit of a tough climb down, but not far. Parking is free and usually plentiful. It says it closes at 8, but I've never actually seen those gates close.

  • A nice, scenic place to hang out for a while. You can look over the cliffs and enjoy the ocean and watch people try to take off with their gliders (or try it yourself if you have the money and desire). There's a small place to get coffee and food, which always looks pretty good though I've never tried any. There is also a good amount of free parking here, so it is a good place for people commuting to UCSD to park if they don't feel like paying and don't mind walking a bit or riding a bike.

  • Love parking here and walking along the cliffs or down to the beach! The landscape makes for epic photos, especially for romantic photos at sunset! Our favorite thing about Torrey Pines Gliderport is the friendly staff, always smiling when we hike back up after photos on the beach and desperately need to buy a bottle of water! • It was fun to watch. On Sundays,it is very busy,so parking is free, but we had to park 1/2 mile away. It is $175 for the experience, but no worries,a professional person will be with you the whole time. Every one we asked, after the ride, said it was great. They BBQ yummy hot dogs, french fries drinks and more at a fair price. There are places to sit as well.

  • Our adventure with the Torrey Pines Gliderport was beyond incredible! The overall experience was so relaxing and one of the best things I've ever done! Once you go trough the paperwork and preparation, the staff is very helpful and sets you up with an instructor. I could not believe how easy it was to take off and land. My instructor was so wonderful and informative. I would recommend this activity to anyone who may be hesitant because it is so easy! Take off and landing was so gentle, I felt like I was in a hammock flying in the sky. Thank you for our amazing flight!
