This brewery and distillery, founded in 1896, is one of the last in the country to make the historic California Common Beer. The brewery nearly closed in the 1950s and 60s, as people began to prefer light lager, and because the new management wasn’t experienced enough in the discipline of making beers. Twice a day the company organises guided public tours, followed by a tasting session. These are by reservation only. Visitors get an insight into beer-crafting techniques that have not changed in the past century and a dollop of San Francisco history.

• Saturday and Sunday: 11am and 2pm
