The Freemasons arrived in California on the heels of the gold rush. Though this location wasn’t the first of their lodges in their city, it was opened as recently as 1958. The venue is today used as public event and concert house. Outside of shows, its tourist value is owed to the beautiful architecture. The great frieze on the façade depicts the eternal struggle between good and evil. There’s a giant mosaic window inlaid with soil from each of the California’s 58 counties, as well as “metal, parchment, felt, linen, silk, natural foliage, veggie pieces, shells and sea life, and stained glass”. Outside, there’s aEmile Norman war memorial sculpture of the four branches of the military.
