The Pier 39 sees quite a great number of seals. The Aquarium of the Bay, which manages the centre, built it to overlook the largest gathering point of the seals at the Pier 39 K-Dock. This place wasn’t always the seal’s home. It was only after the relatively recent LomaPrieta earthquake in January 1990 that they all mysteriously turned up. The playful animals have been charming audiences ever since.
At the centre, you’ll also find interactive exhibits on the seals, be able to touch an actual seal pelt, and compare their own sizes to that of a sea lion.

Sea Lion Center Reviews & Ratings
This pier (39) is probably the highlight of all North Beach, embarcadero and Fisherman's wharf. The sea lions are cute and so entertaining. It's so fun to see them being silly or pushing each other into the water. Best thing is that it's totally free to watch these amazing animals.
Can't say enough about how fun it is to enjoy watching the sea lions here! These are truly "in the wild" sea lions, not in captivity, which makes you feel ethical about watching them sun bathe and enjoy the beautiful weather on Pier 39.
It's an escape from the chaos. So fun to watch these ocean animals play, fall in the water and communicate with each other. Fun to watch for 20 to 40 mins. It's a real escape.
Exactly what it says on the tin. A place where you can see sea lions. Definitely worth a visit and a great place to spend some time watching them getting all upset with one another. As you'd expect, it's a busy area and you might have to wait to get a really good viewing spot!
The center is on the second floor. There are a few activities your children can enjoy. they have live presentations and experts answering questions. Definitely a nice stop where you are visiting and the children will enjoy it.
