The park was once the estate of AdoplhSutro, a mayor and developer of the city. Liking the views – Cliff House, Seal, Pacific Ocean, MountTamalpais, and the Golden Gate – he converted this 22-acre property into a beautiful garden. The estate was given over to the city in the 1930s. Most of the statuary was removed, but you can still enjoy the flowerbeds, the elegant paths, hedge mazes, trees, (eucalyptus, Monterey pines, Norfolk Island pines and cypress) and parterres. Two lion statues still guard the entrance. Walk over to the promontory overlooking the ocean, where you can spot the Cliff House and the Seal Rocks. You’ll find the Dolce Far Niente, a 250-foot-long cantilevered wood deck.

  • This place is very strange and one of those San Francisco gems that you just have to check out. I have lived here now for years and I still come back here. It's such a strange story of Sutro and his baths and what this place was that you have to take someone from out of town and explain it. It's also fun for kids because the ruins seem more ancient and mysterious than they actually are. My kids thought that this was a Roman camp, which is pretty funny if you think about it.

  • Truly beautiful Vistas from Sutro Park you sort of have to wonder what the view was like for the folks who used to live there. The house was torn down many many years ago photographs are all that's left… regardless the views are fantastic; they definitely beat the views off Lands End. Unfortunately, and I guess… fortunately for dog owners, the park has gone to the dogs, so be careful where you walk; try to stick to the trails. If you pay close attention around the southern rim of the park you'll see the fake Hill that was bilt to hide gun emplacements after Pearl Harbor was attacked at the Lookout Point you will see some of the same and if you look over the edge you'll still see some of the Hidden stairs, Etc used by the Army at the time. Just a bit of additional history for those who really want to know about San Francisco.
