Emanuel Swedenborg was an 18th century scientist and mystic. This church was founded on his ideologies, and the building was built in 1895. Now a national historic landmark, the building is famous for its unusual architecture, of a style known as Arts and Crafts.

The Arts and Craft artistic movement lasted only briefly, between 1880 and 1910, and was focused on simplicity of materials and forms, and the use of folk and traditional decoration.

As such, the church’s look is quite charming. Inside the church you’ll find maple chairs, four seasonal landscape murals, and huge columns of support hewn from untrimmed trees. The church is a popular wedding venue in Pacific Heights.

  • I discovered the Swedenborgian Church while on a City Guides walking tour. What a gem! Hidden behind a wall, you walk past a mini meadow with nicely kept flowers & shrubs. The church interior has a Swedish design inclination. Loads of wood and a very natural style of decor. There are antique items that make the place feel homey. The interior design is unique. The congregation is a mix of people and very welcoming. This intimate church is a nice respite from the larger more flamboyant churches. If you like architecture/interior design, check this place out.

  • I just had my wedding there about a month ago and let me tell you it was AMAZING! I am so glad I choose that chapel, the people there are amazing just trying to make sure you're okay and are ready.. we got the whole package with pictures video candy table everything. And the pictures are just amazing you can tell she took her time making sure the quality and the positions were just perfect! I loved it and the video was really nice too.

  • Funky like San Francisco. Perfect for a San Francisco wedding.

  • We were married at Swedenborgian almost two years ago and had a wonderful experience. The historic church is naturally beautiful and the candles and lit fireplace during the ceremony made it feel magical and intimate. Reverend Lee married us and we are so grateful for the time he took to counsel us before the wedding. He made us feel comfortable during the entire process and the ceremony he performed was very moving. The parish house and garden were the perfect space for our 50 person reception. We still feel so lucky we happened upon Swedenborgian Church while planning our wedding!

  • The Catering Co. A Tasteful Affair, did a lovely job.
