San Francisco’s gayest district started out as dairy farms and dirt roads back in the 19th century. Irish, German, and Scandinavian immigrants were its first significant residents, and they built the beautiful Victorian houses you still see today. In the 1960s, gay men began to buy these houses by the droves. United by stresses of the HIV epidemic, and the assassination of Harvey Milk, the neighbourhood began to open celebrate its homosexual identity. Today, that identity forms a large part of the districts tourist appeals. Brimming with events, cafes, restaurants, and boutiques, the district is always bustling. It truly comes to life at night thought, when the districts many gay and straight bars and club light up. Pub crawls here are a fantastic idea.
