Built in 1904, this 12-story highrise in the downtown shopping district is one of San Francisco’s best known landmarks. Its fame isn’t derived from its moderately elegant looks; rather, the building known for having survived the 1906 Earthquake and subsequent fires largely unscathed, one of the very few large structures to do so. It’s a commercial building, and several important enterprises have had their offices on these premises. For example, it was home to the Pinkerton Detective Agency, F. W. Woolworth Company store, and the Southern Pacific Railroad company HQ.
That said, it’s best appreciated from the outside. There’s nothing to do inside.
