There’s some confusion whether this is bar or cafe. Well, it’s a historic saloon actually. Found in 1948, it was a famous Beat Generation author hangout (including Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Neal Cassady), thanks to its moody atmosphere, jazz music, art and decor, and poets. Little has changed inside the cafe since those days. Those on the San Francisco Beat Trail can’t afford to give this place a miss.
The cafe is right opposite the alley from the famous City Lights Bookstore. The name of the alley is Jack Kerouac Alley. Check out its plaques, tiles, frescoes and signs.

Vesuvio Reviews & Ratings
It's a great bar with reasonable prices, there's an intimate feel about it which I love. I think it's great that you can sit upstairs and get table service from the the bar downstairs, to avoid over crowding. There's a decent selection of drinks and it's surrounded by other establishments if you wanted to hop from bar to bar. The staff have always be so lovely too.
Such a great bar with an intimate setting. The prices are quite reasonable which is actually pretty crazy considering the location. The upstairs is the best place to sit and enjoy a drink while watching the other people in and outside of the bar. The staff is always very accommodating and friendly.
As a 15 year local I still stop here for the ambiance and mix of North Beach action. Tourists and young locals alike come here for low-end whiskey and cocktails. Still the genuine article. Highly recommended.
Great bar scene with some super interesting people. Dropped in for a quick drink and was pleasantly surprised. Would definitely recommend this place for a taste of cool SF nostalgia and spirit
Where Kerouac, Ginsberg, Neal Cassidy Ferlinghetti and the rest of the Beats drank. A must for the hip and literate.
