Located 55 kilometers from San Jose, the Irazu Volcano erupted for 4 years in the early 1960’s and is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica. The eruption covered the nearby Cartago and San José in volcanic ash and even today, the volcano releases toxic smoke into the air.

The weird part about the volcano are the farms that still grow fresh produce very close to its crater/ caldera. The volcano stands at an elevation of more than 11,000 feet and also has a crater lake called Diego de la Haya. The summit is easily accessible and is one of the most popular tourist spot in Costa Rica. On a clear day you can see the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans from the summit. Do explore the surrounding national park to spot species of owls, woodpeckers, foxes and hummingbirds.
