Alum Rock Park - Review

The Oldest Park in California, this lovely place established in 1872, is an amazing tourist attraction and the perfect place to relax and unwind amidst the gorgeous surroundings.

The Place used to be full of mineral springs but most of these have become extinct. What do remain are the lovely stonework grottos that used to mark these springs that are a lovely sight to see. The flora and fauna of the area is very unique and interesting. If you are a budding ornithologist, you will love to see the amazing variety of forest birds in the area.

The trails are quite easy and hence ideal for kids. There is a pretty little play area for children as well. Whether you want to do some exercise, take someone out on a date, enjoy a nice picnic with the family or just simply hang out with friends, this place is the ideal venue for it all.

  • As far as the paid parks that have been to this is my favorite thus far. The trails are magnificent, with a wide variety of difficulties to choose from, and an Adventure level to fit most people. Meaning some of the Trails can really make you feel like you're mountain lion bait 😂. To be honest though if you're on those type of trails you should probably be with a group, just for safety purposes. There's really a lot to do here. There are several stages that you can park at the furthest one up is what I would consider to be the main attraction. You have a ranger station that has a small Museum in it, and a few extra little stations that give some information about the park and the Animals within the park. There are plenty of benches, grills, and well-maintained open areas to have a picnic or a small cookout. I'm not sure if this is allowed here, but there are quite a few open well-maintained areas with trees just perfect for hammocks. I would ask a park ranger before doing so just in case. From what I saw there is also to play areas for small children, along with a few vending machines for sodas, Waters, and sports drinks. Just a heads up there is a $6 parking fee to come to this park but it's completely worth it!

  • This place is great. They have a all animal center with some wildlife that's common in the park. The mineral springs are very interesting but smell terrible. I've caught lizards, frog, millipede and almost caught a snake in a tree. Saw the biggest mosquito eater, not sure what the official name is, and waded in the creek. Its so close to the city and feels so far away. Love it.

  • The park is wonderful and has multiple options for the type of walking or hiking. The trails are well marked and there is plenty of facilities for use. We saw so much wifdlife - deer, hawks, beautiful birds , etc... Enjoy you will love it. Great place to take kids too!

  • Very nice hiking and biking trails, paved and not paved, moderate to very difficult. Nice nature. Plenty of parking and restrooms. Seen many people, obviously popular.

  • Excellent park both for picnic sorts of recreation and for hikes into wilderness. The main path up the canyon follows Upper Penitenica Creek with lots of picnic areas and amenities for those looking to hang out BBQ, etc. If you get past those you'll get to the old mineral springs area which is really cool. Aquamarine blue water still flows from grottos in the hill. Most of them have sulfur scent and have had lots of rock work done around them in the past. The forest in the canyon is lush and home to a variety of animals. The canyon is shaded so is a great place to escape the heat.
