Museo De Las Americas - Review

Located in Old San Juan in an even older quarter in Ballaja the Museum occupies the second floor of this three storey building. It houses cover arts and exhibits from the Pre Columbian era explaining the evolution of the Americas. It includes a section named ‘El indio en América’ explaining about the 22 indigenous tribes in America. Others include the cover arts for slave trade, history of the beginning of colonization and traditional folk art from all over Americas. Ther’s also a projector room showing several short film regarding the subject. The bronze statues are made by a Peru based artist Felipe Lettersten.

Museo De Las Americas, San Juan Reviews

  • An amazing museum. The José Alicea exhibit on right now is incredible. The folk art and history exhibits are great. Worth so much more than $6.

  • Very interesting museum in an old Spanish military base building. They have a great exhibition of the culture of PR, artist. Great little restaurant downstairs for tapas and other food. Also so close to the house of Ponce de Leon and the San Felipe El Morro Castle it makes it a very nice stop to seethe exhibit.

  • Beautiful collection of folk art with changing exhibitions. Small and well worth visiting.

  • Inside a quiet square (also containing a small cafe/coffee shop) and currently being renovated from storm damage, there is still an exhibit open called Catharsis. This exhibit was beautiful and full of pieces from local artists and students to express their feelings from the storm, aftermath, and recovery. Some were hopeful - others more critical of the storm recovery efforts - but overall helped us as tourists empathize with the local culture.

  • Museo de las Américas / Cuartel de Ballaja it's a landmark in Old San Juan. It's a historical building from late 19th century. At first it was a military headquarters for the Spanish army during the colonial era, then it was a military hospital for the American troops during WWII and the Korean War, and now is the home of the Museo de las Américas. It has many exhibition halls featuring art from all over the Americas and Africa. It has restaurants, souvenir shops and plenty of space to have a good time with friends or family. It also hosts cultural and musical activities. If you ever go to Old San Juan,Puerto Rico, don't miss the opportunity and pay a visit.
