As you cross the Southern Gateway of Sanchi Stupa, you will come across a huge pillar erected by Ashoka in the 3rd century, embellished with a display ofall the characteristics of monoliths such as carvings and murals. The shaft of the pillar can only be seen at the gateway and the crown has been kept in the museum. With the qualities of being well proportioned, beautiful carvings and metallic glow, this pillar looks stupendous as you have a look at it. Infact, the figure of lion that gets represented here was also adopted as the National Emblem of India.
