One of the oldest stone structures of India, Sanchi Stupa is the specimen of Buddhist art and architecture making its presence felt today in the modern world. A stupa is a hemispherical dome that houses a central chamber, to preserve the relics of the Buddha. The Sanchi Stupa is one of the best preserved early stupas in central India where Lord Buddha is symbolically represented through footprints, wheels, thrones etc rather than by his own image. Circumambulating the structure are four carved gateways facing all the four directions. On these gates, you will be able to see beautifully and intricately sculpted motifs as well as symbols. They delineate the incidents from the life of the Buddha and his previous incarnations as Bodhisattvas described in the Jataka tales. Due to its ancient lineage, the Sanchi Stupa has been included by the UNESCO as one of the heritage sites of the world. Built in ancient India (3rd Century BC by King Ashoka) and rediscovered in the British era by General Taylor in 1818, the Sanchi Stupa is symbolic of Indian heritage that continues to mesmerize the world even till today. A visit to this place will greatly add to your experiences of Madhya Pradesh tourism as a whole.
