It’s rare to find a Courthouse touted as an important cultural and architectural landmark in the area, but this unique property is well worth the visit. The Santa Barbara County Courthouse in sunny California has been a source of much civic pride since 1850, its establishment as a small Greek-Revival Courthouse that was the seat of the local government. Attracting visitors and tourists from around the world, this is where hundreds of couples have gotten married in the past and its mural rooms, grounds and law library are renowned and much prestigious, retaining a certain old-world formality that is irresistibly charming.
The current structure is in fact a reconstruction of the original, facilitated in 1926, after facing the brunt of an earthquake in the preceding year. Inaugurated on August 14, 1929, with a highly symbolic ceremony on the main stage with a throng of people looking on during the 1929 celebration of the Old Spanish Days. The Santa Barbara County Courthouse opened its doors with the setting of the bronze medallion provided by the Native Sons of Golden West, with the mixing of the ingredients of water from each of the California Missions, with sand and gravel from each of the counties in Californiaas well as cement from local sources.
As you take the elevator to the top of this magnificent structure, you can gaze out over Santa Barbaraand the fourth-floor observatory offers you panoramic views all the way out till the ocean. The tile work along the staircases is exquisite and the interior of the Bell Tower Clock is truly massive. As a criminal defense lawyer, I couldn't ask for ask for a better place to work every day and to call my neighbor. The architecture and decor are beautiful. The grounds, exotic plants and trees are expertly and lovingly maintained. The court staff is professional and courteous. The clock tower has the best panoramic view from any downtown building and the sunken garden is wonderful place to put on outdoor events; and there are many. It is no doubt one of the most beautiful and well-utilized in-service courthouses on the planet.
We stumbled across the court house on a road trip, and what an amazing find! Absolutely beautiful architecture, grounds and view! Take a minute the next time your in the area and walk through, it will be well worth it.
This is a truly wonderful court house to visit. Breathtaking architecture and surrounds. Take the elevator to the top to see the clock in action and get great views of Santa Barbara.
Incredible view of all of Santa Barbara. Beautiful art and Spanish architecture.
Beautiful! This is definitely a place you'll take a few pictures! The building is gorgeous outside and in. I'm a particularly big fan of all the beautiful tiles. And don't forget to go all the way to the top so you can look out over the city! There's only one small elevator, so plan on waiting if there's even the slightest crowd.
