With a view of mountain and sea, the animals at Santa Barbara Zoo are blessed with a home view better than what most humans acquire in their living quarters in their lives!
The Santa Barbara Zoo makes for a great half-day trip when you’re in the city. Spanning an area of 30 acres near the ocean in California, it was formerly known as the Child's Estate Zoo and has been ranked several times as one of the country’s best small zoos since its establishment in August 1963 by community volunteers.
Home to 600 animals, including capybara and Californian Condors, it is famous for having had a giraffe with a crooked neck, ‘Gemima’.You can also listen in at the frequent, free guided tours, or stop to listen to theinformative mini-lectures in front of many of the exhibits. The animals are evidently well-taken care of in their habitats and the children’s play area is always populated with screaming, happy children.
Non-animal attractions include the 2 ft narrow gauge Zoo Train, complete with a pair of Chance Rides C.P. Huntington locomotives.

Santa Barbara Zoo, Santa Barbara Reviews - Write a Review
My husband and I went here as part of our 2-day stop in Santa Barbara. It was reasonably priced and they had quite a bit to see. They let you know if the feeding times upon entry if you want to see the animals a bit closer, which was nice. The photo prices for the souvenir were more expensive than the entry to the zoo for two people, which I found a little ridiculous. Saying that, it was a great visit and a way to spend our time here.
Went with my husband on a Wednesday afternoon. We hadn't been there before. We were incredibly impressed. We are used to the L.A. Zoo. This was way more personal and intimate. All of the animals were out and active and with minimal view obstruction. We had one-on-one interaction with zoo keepers who were very excited about their work. We had a great time.
Really nice smaller zoo. Can see the whole thing in a couple hours but exceeded my expectations for a smaller city zoo. Lots of animals and educational material with feeding demonstrations.
This zoo was so nice. Not too big so great to take the kids too. Great variety of animals. The penguins and meerkats were so active and playful. The leopard was beautiful and there were so many other animals that my kids loved. You can even pay to fed the giraffes. Which is a fun experience.
I love our Zoo because it's such a personable and small and family-oriented space. It does not have a large collection of animals but the animals are much better taking care of compare to other much larger zoos, it appears that way at least. It's a great place to take your family to spend spend 3 hours together!!
