To really get a feel of this gorgeous city, you should definitely make a trip to State Street in downtown Santa Barbara.A lovely little strip teeming with shops, boutiques, restaurants, major department stores, movie theatres, spacious sidewalks and varied restaurants serving fantastic food at reasonable prices.
State Street is essentially a highlight in this extremely ‘tourist-friendly’ city. If you’re in town on a weekend, be sure to check out the weekend farmer's market, a real treat.
The lower part of State Street leads to the harbour and waterfront for those that are looking for a proper shore-side sight-seeing experience. From the harbour you can take a nice walk along the shore and visit the numerous shops and beaches, the Funk Zone, and hotels.
It would be advisable to try and avoid State Street on weekends and hot summer days as the streets will be swamped with a lot of tourists eager for photo-ops that you’ll have to awkwardly jostle past in. If you’re the sort that likes to do things at your own pace, you should try and come by late in the afternoon and round off your day with a couple of drinks at a bar in the side-streets.
