Hostal Dos Reis Catolicos Or Catholic Kings HostalCurrently Closed
Also known as the Hospital dos Reis Catolicos is now a 5-star Parador hotel, located in Santiago de Compostela. It was built in 1499 with the aim of serving as a hostal for pilgrims who slept on the streets of the city. It was like a shelter for them. This hostal is situated at the end of the Pilgrimage trail, leading to the way to Saint James. It is said to be the oldest refuge in the world. The facade of the hostal has a Castilian coat of arms along with Adam, Eve and various other saints. Once you enter the hostal, there are four arcaded patios that have gargoyle rainpouts. These rainpouts are said to be the caricatures of 16th century townsfolk. It is now one of the most luxurious inns in Spain.

Great location, right next to the cathedral. BeBeautiful restored ancient hostel/hospital for pilgrims. Nice rooms, great breakfast!
You feel submerged in tradition. Excellent location, steps away from Cathedral. Wonderful breakfast. Nice staff. Definitely the hotel to stay in Santiago!
What a hotel should be! Luxury and beauty in a gorgeous medieval building but totally up to date. Some things are actually better than I have a home! The restaurants are pricey at 5 stars but the food is, definitely, 5 stars and worth it. Service is fast, courteous and efficient. In Summary, a great place to stay. After 3 days, it's still as wonderful as the first.
One of our favourite places we stayed during a 2 week roadtrip across northern Spain. The building itself is stunning and full of history, having been built by the king of Spain as a hospital for pilgrims in 1499. It has been stunningly renovated, keeping the original features yet adding modern luxuries such as marble topped bathrooms. Contrary to the other reviews we found the beds excellent and had a great night’s sleep. Staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, they gave us a quiet room on the top floor when we asked for one at check in. Breakfast spread is sumptuous - fit for kings. The location can not be better in Santiago. It’s right on the square by the cathedral and if you’re arriving by car you get to drive through the pedestrian zone past all the beautiful buildings and then park up right in front of the hotel to unload your bags (the car then gets valet parked for €20 per night). All in all an incredible experience and well worth the money!
A stunning hotel full of history charm and warmth in a splendid location. I can't wait to return
