Otaru Canal - Review
The 1140-metre-long Otaru Canal, being the centrepiece of the port during the first half of the twentieth century, now acts as the symbol of the city of Otaru. With a width of 40 metres, the Otaru Canal dates back to the Taisho Era when it was used to transport materials to and from Hokkaido. A 20-metre-wide walkway to the south of the canal is flanked by a number of shops and restaurants and is also one of the most romantic date-spot with its vintage ambience. You can reserve a cruise tour down the canal to enjoy the night view or take a stroll along the walkway to explore the Asakusabashi-Gaien Park and the brick warehouses and Sapporo freestones from the pre-World War II ERA. Plan a visit during Otaru Snow Light Path Festival in February to watch the people floating candles inside glass floats in the canal water.

Otaru Canal, Sapporo-shi Reviews
I had very high expectations for this place because it is one of the most recommended places to go to in Otaru. But I wasn't able to appreciate it that much since I went alone, it would have probably be better strolling along the canal with your family or special someone :) But the view, especially at night, is really something to be grateful about. Be mindful though because there are a lot of tourists so sometimes it may be difficult to get a good picture that has few people in the background.
Otaru Canal is a good sightseeing spot albeit there’s not much else to do. It makes a good spot for taking pictures. You can also hop on to a gondola-like boat to explore the canal. The best time to visit this spot is in the afternoon. From the canal, You can walk about 200-300 meter to find Otaru Shopping Street and spend more enjoyful site seeing there.
Really lovely old town. The more developed parts of town have a great industrial vibe to them. If you can manage a steep climb, the temple overlooking the town gives you a fantastic view over Otaru
We visited on a sunny day in May where the tourists were few and weather was marvelous. The canal is a lot shorter and smaller than people think it is. In other words, it's hardly the "Venice of Japan" so please don't expect it to be. The walk is complete in under 15 minutes. A few rickshaw guys approached us for a tour but we weren't interested - perhaps they knew more paths less travelled?
It's a nice experience walking along the canal especially in the evening enjoying the golden sunset and follows with a good dinner at all the nice restaurants along the canal. When you are at Otaru, it's a must visit attraction.
