Otaru Canal, Sapporo-shi Reviews

  • Very beautiful place to visit in the winter. There are snowmen all around build by the owners and please don't touch or you may destroy them. I would suggest to plan for 4 hours there. We took a group tour and spend only 2.5hours there, which is not enough. The are many cheap and good food around. We had fresh salmon with miss soup and rice for only 800yen (It will easily cost around 1200yen in other part of Japan).

  • The canal is a ~10min walk from the station. The main picturesque stretch is between two bridges a short distance apart. It was a beautiful sight both in the day and at night. As I went in end Feb, it was already past the otaru light festival in early/mid Feb. But it was still worth a visit. There are restaurants and duty free shops around the canal, and quite a number of museums (including sake museum) nearby

  • A must when travelling in Sapporo, an amazing scene at the canal especially at night. Great for taking photos. Around the area is a huge fish market with restaurants and souvenirs store. You can easily spend the entire day eating fresh seafood, sightseeing and getting many exclusive goods that are in Sapporo and Hokkaido only.

  • The canal was pretty but very small. We didn't go during peak season so there wasn't as many tourists but I can imagine how crowded it can get if hordes of tourists were there fighting for a photo. The canal is good for a quick photo and walk around.

  • Worth a night stroll for the atmosphere when they have their light-up event (mid Nov to mid Feb) but I wouldn't come during other times/seasons. Recommend walking straight down to the historic Sakaimachi Shopping Street 境町通り with tons of preserved buildings for a retro tour of Otaru.
