Mable and John Ringling have left behind their legacy to serve and entertain people from all corners of the world through what is now the State of Art Museum of Florida. This museum is divided into various parts boasts of a collection of almost 20,000 displays and exhibits. This includes paintings of different genres, art work, sculptures, prints, photographs and much more to please your eyes with.
Ringling is said to have willed his property and estate completely in the name of the State of Florida before his death in 1936. The beautiful place could still not be opened completely to the public due to various legal issues as the estate was almost completely bankrupt at this time. The Ringling Museum of Art is free on Mondays (thanks to John Ringling himself specifying that before his death) or $25 the rest of the week (including the circus museum.) Make sure to allow 5+ hours if you are going to enjoy the museums and grounds. Beautiful art literally hundreds of years old and collected by John Ringling himself from all over the world. Tours are given on the top of every hour near the main entrance which are quite interesting! Each painting and sculpture has a detailed description on laminated sheets in the room and near the painting /sculpture itself. This place will make you appreciate art and leave you in awe!
Found the exhibits amazing. The days of the traveling circus were over before I was born. The exhibits provided great insights into the massive scale of these operations. The miniature models were very detailed and further drove home the incredible logistics. Was surprised to discover there was some incredible artwork on display also. Thoroughly enjoyed.
If you have never been to an art museum, and you were dropped onto earth from outer space, this would be truly a memory that you would take back to your planet! This museum is so beautiful it defies words. From the architecture of the structure itself, to the palatial grounds, to the many, many beautiful sculptures. You will enjoy the most amazing display of art from history's most revered international, classic artists. This is a MUST stop if you are in Sarasota. I am amazed at how many people do NOT know of this most precious gem representing the culture of this beautiful city. Do NOT mistake the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art as a circus entity. The grounds are totally separate from the other main attractions at this location: those being a tour of the John and Mabel Ringling Mansion (another MUST visit if you have time), and the Ringling Brothers Circus Museum. I am dumbfound as to how many people have visited the beautiful city of Sarasota and have NO clue that this most beautiful attraction exist. So, I hope that my review will convince you to go treat yourself and visit this most amazing attraction! You will have an experience that you will never forget!!!!!!!!
The Ringling is an extraordinary well-preserved, multifaceted slice of American history. It is a three-in-one delite, combining a fabulous historical mansion, a one-of-a-kind museum preserving the wonder of the American traveling circus, along with a serious world class art museum. All this set in a park like setting along the shore in beautiful Sarasota Florida. This should be a vacation destination, but it's mandatory if you are already planning to be in the area.
