February: In 2009, the town began hosting an innovative event called ‘Coastival’, an arts and cultural extravaganza. Every year, the festival offers over hundreds of events and activities ranging from comedy, visual art, theatre, films and musical performances topped off with a stunningly gorgeous ambience.
March:The National Student Drama Festival is held across several venues in Scarborough, including the famous Stephen Joseph Theatre, the Spa Complex and the University of Hull campus. The festival goes on till early April.
April: April is the favoured month for a lot of Scarborough’s cultural activities. Scarborough Literature Festival and Ian Watson Spring National Road Racesare very popular with locals and tourists alike.
May: Festival of Speed Hill Climb Weekend attracts many car and bike hill climb fanatics.
June: Scalby Fair in the Scalby village is a weekend long celebration. Tons of activities including children’s fancy dress parade, traditional fair stalls, carnival food, face painting, magic shows and so much more.
July: Scarborough celebrates its connection to the sea during Seafest, an annual festival that is held around the shore, particularly West Pier. The festival brings together a large gathering of folk singers, musicians and shantymen. Naval themed exhibitions, famous brewery stalls, seafood cooking festivals and fun activities for children are all regular features of the festival. Over the years, Seafest has drawn artists from many other countries as well such as Canada, Luxemburg, Germany, Holland, USA etc.
July is also the time for ‘Staxtonbury Family Music Festival’ held at Manor Farm, Staxton.
August: Featuring the Yorkshire Country Cricket Club, Scarborough Cricket Festival begins in late August and goes on till early September at the Cricket grounds on North Marine Road.
September: Acoustic Gathering at Peasholm Park is a one day, free for all event that features song writers and singers from across the country. This is also the time for the Jazz festival at the Spa Complex.
November: Northern Scarborough Dance Festival held at the Grand Hall of the Spa Complex.
December: Part of the festivities during the holiday season is the ‘Boxing Day Raft Race’ that is arranged at the Scarborough Harbour every year by Sub Aqua Club.Fancy dressed participants are cheered on by the onlookers as they take on the challenge to race against one another in their hoe made rafts.
